San Luis Obispo County’s Edna Valley, along with the rolling hills of Paso Robles, are increasingly giving Napa a run for its money with world-class wines. Spend an afternoon exploring the verdant San Luis Obispo countryside! Here’s a suggested self-guided tour of Edna Valley wineries, all within 30 miles of the Pismo Beach House:

Claiborne & Churchill, 2649 Carpenter Canyon Road (Route 227), (805) 544-4066. Turn right at the end of scenic Price Canyon Road. The winery is on the right, close to the intersection. Ask about the unique straw bale construction of this wine cellar. Free wine tasting, open 11-6 daily. A few gift store items.

Proceeding south, turn left on Corbett Canyon Road for Kynsi Winery, 2212 Corbett Canyon Road, (805) 544-8461. This is a small winery offering six wines to taste for $5. Open 11-5 Friday through Sunday.

Continue south on Corbett Canyon Road, go left on Tiffany Ranch Road and right on Orcutt Road toward Arroyo Grande. Orcutt dead-ends on Lopez Drive. Go left to Talley Vineyards, 3031 Lopez Drive, Arroyo Grande, (805) 489-0446. Open 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. Wine tasting, $3-$5, gift shop.

Retracing your steps, follow Orcutt Road north past Tiffany Ranch Road to Domaine Alfred, 7525 Orcutt Road, (805) 541-9463. Open for wine tasting Thursday-Monday, 10-5. There is a charge of $4-$6.

Continue north on Orcutt Road past Biddle Ranch Road to Baileyana, 5828 Orcutt Road, (805) 597-8200. It is a must-stop, with free wine tasting, a well-stocked gift store, outdoor picnic facilities, and a delightful assortment of whites and reds.

Turn back south on Orcutt Road to 2585 Biddle Ranch Road, for a stop at Edna Valley Vineyard, (805) 544-5855. Open Saturday and Sunday 11-4 only, with tours on the hour. Gift shop.
